In an AV over IP architecture the encoder is the source-side endpoint. It captures HDMI video and audio, compresses it with H.264 or H.265, and places it on the network as a stream. Any decoder on the same network can then display that source — or several decoders can display it simultaneously for point-to-multipoint distribution.
